The postal city, state-code and USPS ZIP-code lookup tab provides three address code data windows. The USPS ZIP-code finder data window is described in the next web page. City lookup establishes postal city and state-code context for street, building and rural route lookup. Once a postal city is set, other address element tabs appear.

The state-code lookup window lists 60 USPS state-codes when no state-code lookup clue has been entered and the geographic configuration includes the entire USPS service area. Hierarchically, postal state-code is the most significant USPS address element and therefore has no context. State-code can be bypassed and be implicitly set by USPS ZIP-code.

The state-code lookup clue is a live field meaning that every keystroke updates the candidate state-code list. For example, typing 'H' would reduce the candidate state-code list to only one state-code "HA" for "HAWAII". Once state-code has been established, all address elements not found in the state are eliminated.

The postal city lookup window lists all cities in the established state conforming to the city name lookup clue or USPS ZIP-code lookup clue. The list contains both postal and non-postal cities.

City context is established by the state-code and can be set implicitly by setting the USPS ZIP-code.

The city lookup clue field is live meaning every keystroke updates the city lookup candidate list. For example, consider city lookup of "EUREKA CA". Once the state of California is set (two keystrokes), more than 1200 postal and non-postal "CA" city names appear in city lookup window. Typing 'E' in the city lookup clue field reduces the city list to 38 names. 'U' reduces the list to "EUREKA CA". Only four keystrokes are required to reduce tens of thousands of USPS city names, to establish the postal city context, "EUREKA CA".

Postal Software - Non-postal City Lookup

The USPS publishes tens of thousands of non-postal city, "aka" city names. The city lookup example above resulted in a second non-postal "EUREKA CA" representing one postal ZIP-code in "CUTTEN CA".
