USPS® DPV®Standardized Footnotes

Mail*LIST and Mail*STAR are required to express DPV results using USPS standard two character footnotes.

Footnotes Reporting CASS™ ZIP+4™ Certification

  • AA – Input address matched to the ZIP+4 file.
  • A1 – Input address not matched to the ZIP+4 file.

Footnotes Reporting DPV Validation Observations

  • BB - Matched to DPV (all components).
  • CC - Secondary number not matched (present but invalid).
  • N1 - High-rise address missing secondary number.
  • M1 - Primary number missing.
  • M3 - Primary number invalid.
  • P1 - Input Address RR or HC Box number Missing.
  • P3 - Input Address PO, RR, or HC Box number Invalid.
  • F1 - Input Address Matched to a Military Address.
  • G1 - Input Address Matched to a General Delivery Address.
  • U1- Input Address Matched to a Unique ZIP Code™.

Footnotes Reporting CMRA Observation

A commercial mail-receiving agency (CMRA) is a private business that is approved to accept mail on behalf of third parties. If the delivery address matches to a CMRA location, one of the following footnotes will appear.
  • RR – Matched to CMRA.
  • R1 – Matched to CMRA but secondary number not present.

USPS Standardized DPV Validation Codes

The three single character codes associated with DPV validation set only if the address has been ZIP+4 coded. These characters are here referenced as:

DPV ZIP+4 Coded - domain = {' ','Y','S','D','N'}

  • blank when the address was not ZIP+4 coded
  • 'N' when standardized but NOT DPV confirmed
  • 'Y' when standardized and DPV confirmed all components
  • 'S' when standardized and DPV confirmed for primary number only
    (secondary number not confirmed)
  • 'D' when standardized as a default ZIP+4 record

CMRA - domain = {' ','Y','N'}

  • blank if DPV confirmed is 'N' or the address was not ZIP+4 coded
  • 'N' if DPV confirmed {'Y','S','D'} and not a CMRA location
  • 'Y' if DPV confirmed {'Y','S','D'} and is a CMRA location

False Positive - domain = {' ','Y','N'}

  • blank if DPV confirmed is {'Y','S','D'} or the address was not ZIP+4 coded
  • 'N' if DPV confirmed is 'N' and not a False Positive hit
  • 'Y' if DPV confirmed is 'N' and there was a False Positive hit.
